AOC Saumur Puy-Notre-Dame

Saumur Puy-Notre-Dame, discover the history of a young appellation.

Created in 2009, the Saumur Puy-Notre-Dame appellation brings together a group of vineyards in the Saumur region located in 17 communes around Puy Notre Dame.
The Domaine du Vieux Pressoir can claim to be one of the driving forces behind this AOC, as part of the team of winegrowers who fought for recognition of this appellation. A handful of winegrowers embarked on the adventure, without any means or support, and with one objective: to create a top-of-the-range Loire red wine. From this idea, the most severe production and vinification criteria were imposed.
Our objective was not to reach a large production volume, but to obtain a quality wine: Saumur Puy-Notre-Dame.

An appellation of excellence

Today, around 20 winemakers are producing this high range wine and commit themselfe to respect some stric production rules :

  • A quality and recognition process is undertaken during the month of July prior to the harvest. The winegrowers visit the vineyards involved in SPND to confirm the quality criteria adopted
  • Yield: 50 hl/ha max
  • Pruning: Seven eyes maximum per vine
  • The ageing of the wine until at least the 1st of june, following the harvest

The Domaine du Vieux Pressoir has chosen not to market its Saumur Puy-Notre-Dame wines before 1 September of the following year of production.

Tasting of Saumur Puy-Notre-Dame

The colour of our Saumur Puy-Notre-Dame is an intense red. It offers aromas of ripe candied fruits, the tannins are supple and the mouth is long and structured. It expresses itself fully, between 13 and 16° and will accompany a whole meal. A wine for laying down, it can be kept for more than 10 years in the cellar.
Its aromatic structure will allow it to be well paired. It is perfect with grilled red meats and is ideal for meats in sauce, such as rabbit stew or beef stew.
